What is the Marketing M.O.?

It’s a process – a Modus Operandi – to help you

  1. Figure out how to solve marketing challenges and

There are two key features:

  1. Web-based software that delivers plans for hundreds of marketing challenges. Try it now.
  2. 1,200 pages of guided, interactive, formatted best practices (Microsoft Word) and 130 guided, programmed Excel workbooks with formulas that are ready to go. The M.O. covers 29 sales & marketing subjects (here's a map).

The software gives you a plan for a specific marketing challenge. You can customize the steps and save the plans on our site. The plans will also includes links to the relevant Word & Excel exercises you’ll need to execute your project.

How can it help me?

First, we believe in “learning by doing,” and we created the M.O. to help small-to-midsize companies do just that.

You can use the project plan wizard to understand how to approach any one of hundreds of sales & marketing challenges. When you have a new project or problem to tackle, this tool ALONE has great value.

After all, you’re probably an expert in a certain number of subjects, but are you an expert at all 29 subjects in the M.O.? If not, the software can open your eyes to ideas and strategies you may have never thought of.

Once you have a strategy from the wizard, it’s time to execute. If you’re not sure how to proceed, you could spend hours, days or weeks researching, talking with vendors, etc., to figure out how to do specific tasks.

We’ve spent four years assembling best practices in 29 subjects so you don’t have to spend your time re-creating the wheel. You can just download the materials and get started.

Who is it for?

It’s designed for small-to-midsize companies that sell to other businesses (a consumer version is on the way). The web-based software is customized for five different “profiles:”

  4. Aspiring marketers = students, job seekers or anyone who wants to improve his / her marketing skills

The Word & Excel documents are very detailed and are designed to help the person who executes a specific task.

If you’re a high-energy entrepreneur or an executive, you’ll probably give them the login for the M.O. Then they’ll have a tool to understand how to approach a problem and execute without spending valuable time figuring out where to start or what to do.

Is it software?

Yes and no. The project plan wizard is a web-based software tool. It’s simple to use – you can run a customized plan in just three steps, then save it on the site and send it to yourself via email.

However, the guided best practices are Word & Excel documents. They’re formatted with checkboxes and open response areas for you to record your plans. They also use icons to designate different areas. But they’re still Word & Excel – powerful but simple. You can also modify them as needed and download fresh copies whenever necessary.

You can review & print a sample document in any of the 29 subjects - just use this map to choose a subject.

How does it work?

You’ll use the web-based software (our "project plan wizard") to identify a problem or project and customize a plan to address it. You can email the plan to yourself and save it on the site.

The plan gives you an overall strategy and general step-by-step tactics for your project. It then lists the documents (from our 1,200 pages of best practices) that can help at each step. You’ll click the link, enter your password once, and download the document to your computer, then use/modify it as needed. If you need a fresh one, you can download it again.

What do you mean by "B2B?"

The phrase refers to business-t0-business marketing. If you sell a product or service to businesses, then you’re a B2B marketer. If you sell directly to individuals who use your product for their personal lives, you’re a consumer marketer.

Does the Marketing M.O. work for consumer marketing?

Right now the Marketing M.O.’s content is geared to help business-to-business marketers. While many of the principles are the same, B2B marketers face different challenges than consumer marketers on a daily basis. And while we’re working on a consumer version of the Marketing M.O., some of the chapters can work for either category. I’ve seen marketing templates & software before. How is the M.O. different?

They’re very different. The M.O. combines web-based software and integrated and guided templates and exercises to help you solve problems and pick out the materials you need for your specific scenario. Our goal is to help you learn by doing and get real results.

Most template providers give you a list of documents to choose from, but you have to know exactly what you need and what to do with it.

In addition to giving you a plan for your project, our best practices are very specific, thorough and guided.

How did you create these materials?

Thirty-five people from ten companies brought all of their expertise together and built this material over four years.

We’ve been told that it encompasses an entire career’s worth of sales & marketing knowledge, and some of our business partners have told us it sounds too good to be true. And then they got in and used the M.O. and realized that the value was even greater than they had heard.

So we’d like to think that those four years (and the years in the workplace before that time) were well spent!
